How to Audition for the Youth Chorus

2020-21 Online Auditions

NOTE: Auditions for the 2020-21 season are closed.

Please check back soon for updated information about auditions for the 2021-22 season.

STEP 1

Complete the Online Application & Upload a Student Photo

Each student who wants to audition for the Youth Chorus must complete the ONLINE AUDITION APPLICATION.

At the end of the application, you will be required to upload a picture, which will be used for office purposes only.

The picture should focus on the applicant's face and may be taken informally with a smartphone. Pictures may not exceed 10 MB

and should be in one of the following formats: JPG, PNG, or GIF. You will not be able to submit the application without the photo, so please have it ready to upload.

STEP 2

Prepare a Solo Piece

Each applicant is to prepare a solo from a classical, art, or folk piece (no Broadway or pop tunes).

Need help selecting a solo piece? No problem!

If you do not have a solo that you are already preparing, visit our SOLO ASSISTANCE page. There, we have a variety of solo selections for different voice ranges, which include downloadable files of the music and accompaniment tracks. Please note, that these pieces are suggestions only and are not required. If you are not sure what part you sing, you will also find a video tutorial from Mr. Singer entitled, "What Voice Part Should You Sing?".

STEP 3

Record & Upload Your Solo Video

When you feel confident in your solo, record a video for online submission. Once you are satisfied with your recording, you will upload it as an unlisted video on YouTube, which makes it private. Only our directors will view your video. Complete instructions for recording and uploading your video may be found on our RECORD YOUR SOLO page.

STEP 4

Schedule a Virtual Interview with the COYC Directors

Your audition will conclude with a brief 10-minute interview, via Zoom, with the Youth Chorus directors. Be sure to have your video link ready when scheduling your interview. You will be required to submit your video link when scheduling.

To book your interview time slot, visit our SCHEDULE YOUR INTERVIEW page. The online booking system is user friendly and will automatically send you a Zoom meeting invitation, via email, after you have selected the interview time. Additionally, you will receive automatic confirmation and reminder emails as the interview date approaches.

What should you expect in the interview?

The directors will want to hear more about your singing background and why you are interested in COYC. They will also guide you through some simple vocal exercises so they can hear your range and assess your pitch-matching ability. You should log in to the interview having already warmed up.

STEP 5

What to Have Ready Before Joining Your Virtual Interview

Before the audition begins, please make sure you have completed the following tasks:

  • Download the Zoom video conferencing platform. To download Zoom, visit https://zoom.us/.

  • Ideally, use a computer (with a built-in camera or external webcam) and headphones to join the virtual interview. If that is not possible, using a tablet or smartphone is acceptable.

  • Be sure to warm up before joining the interview. The directors will guide you through some simple vocal exercises, so that they can assess your range and pitch-matching skills.

Students are typically informed the result of their audition via email within one week of the audition date.

If you have trouble completing any part of the online audition process, please do not hesitate to contact the Chorus Office at chorus@clevelandorchestra.com.
